Logan’s Newborn Session: A Challenging Yet Rewarding Experience at My Studio in Brynmawr, Gwent
Newborn sessions are always special—capturing those first few days of life when babies are so tiny and full of potential. But every now and then, a session comes along that reminds us just how unpredictable the world of newborn photography can be. Logan’s newborn session at my studio in Brynmawr, Gwent, was one of those sessions. Despite a few challenges along the way, it turned out to be a beautiful experience that I’m thrilled to share.
The Arrival
Logan came into my studio with his parents, eager to have some stunning newborn photos to look back on. From the outset, Logan was full of character—wide-eyed and alert, making it clear that he had his own ideas about how the session would go! As many parents of newborns know, babies can be unpredictable, and Logan’s session was no exception.
Newborn sessions typically involve some planning and preparation. We aim to capture a variety of poses, from the classic curled-up, peaceful shots to more awake, emotive moments. However, babies can sometimes have their own schedule, and Logan certainly made sure to let us know that he wasn't quite ready to drift off into that deep newborn sleep we often rely on for the sweetest shots.
The Challenges
As with any newborn session, we started with the goal of creating that calm, dreamy atmosphere. However, Logan had different plans! He wasn’t interested in sleeping through the session. Instead, he preferred staying awake, curious about the new environment around him. This meant that many of the classic sleepy, swaddled shots we hoped for didn’t quite work out.
But we adapted. Newborn sessions are a delicate balance of patience and flexibility, and Logan gave us a chance to practice both. We moved slowly, allowing him to settle and adjust at his own pace, and took breaks when needed. The beauty of these moments, though, was that they allowed me to capture Logan in a way that truly reflected his personality. Instead of the usual sleepy poses, we were able to capture Logan’s curious expressions, tiny features, and little fingers clasped around his parents’ hands.
The Rewarding Moments
As the session progressed, Logan began to settle into a rhythm. He may not have wanted to sleep, but we were able to capture some truly precious moments. His wide-open eyes gave us some stunning shots, and his interactions with his parents were absolutely heartwarming. The love and bond between Logan and his parents were evident in every image, from the gentle caress of his mom’s hand to the tender gaze his dad shared with him.
The session also gave me the opportunity to create some beautiful close-ups of Logan’s little features—his tiny hands, delicate eyelashes, and the soft curve of his lips. These are the details that make newborn photography so special and memorable, and even though the session wasn’t as smooth as we’d hoped, those moments of connection were absolutely worth it.
A Few Tips for Parents Preparing for a Newborn Session
If you're a parent preparing for a newborn session, here are a few things you can keep in mind to ensure the best experience, even if things don't go as planned:
Patience is key – Babies have their own timelines, and no two sessions are the same. The more relaxed and flexible you can be, the better!
It’s okay if they don’t sleep – While sleepy newborn photos are beautiful, awake shots can be just as precious. Sometimes, the best moments happen when babies are alert and interacting with their parents.
Bring snacks and breaks – Newborn sessions can take a few hours, so be prepared for breaks. This helps everyone stay comfortable, including parents and baby.
Don’t worry about perfection – Newborn sessions are about capturing the essence of your baby at this fleeting moment in time. Imperfect moments often turn into the most meaningful memories.
Wrapping Up
Despite the challenges, Logan’s newborn session was an absolute joy. It reminded me why I love doing what I do: the unpredictability of newborns, the creativity involved in working around those challenges, and the final result—a collection of images that will tell a beautiful story for years to come.
I’m so grateful to Logan and his parents for trusting me to capture these first moments of his life. No two newborn sessions are ever the same, and even though this one was a bit tricky, it ended up being a session I won’t forget.
